Meet Dr. Souayah – Virtual Neurology Expert & Second Opinion Specialist

Dr. Nizar Souayah is a triple board-certified neurologist (in Neurology, Neuromuscular Medicine, and Electrodiagnostic Medicine) with over 25 years of clinical and academic leadership in neurology. He is the President and Founding Director of Premier Neuro Health, leading a specialized neuromuscular institute, and is internationally recognized as an authority in complex neurological disorders, neuromuscular diseases, and neuroimmunology.

He trained in internal medicine at Hôpital Civil, University of Strasbourg (France), completed a PGY-1 year at the University of Pennsylvania–Presbyterian Medical Center, and then finished his neurology residency at Temple University Hospital, serving as Chief Resident. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Electromyography/Neuromuscular Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and holds FAAN, FANA, and FAANEM distinctions.

Dr. Souayah previously served as a Professor of Neurology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Neuroscience at Rutgers University, with appointments at New Jersey Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and has served in editorial roles with leading neurology journals, underscoring his ongoing contributions to the field through research and scholarship.

He is the inventor of the U.S. Patent No. 10,682,123, “Biomarker-Based Diagnostic Method for Neuroinflammation in Diabetic Neuropathy and Related Neuropathies.” This pioneering diagnostic detects subtle inflammatory changes in peripheral nerves far earlier than conventional testing, offering patients the possibility of earlier intervention and improved outcomes. By identifying molecular signatures of neuroinflammation, the invention also advances precision medicine, supports better patient selection for clinical trials, and opens new opportunities for targeted therapies in neuroimmunology and diabetic neuropathy.

Dr. Souayah is widely recognized for expertise spanning Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis (MG), inflammatory myopathies, muscular dystrophies, and hereditary neuropathies. His extensive work on vaccine-related neurological complications has further established him as a leading authority on immunization-associated neurological disorders.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Souayah led pioneering efforts to characterize and treat post-COVID neurological syndromes. He provided some of the earliest clinical insights into post-viral neuroimmune effects, establishing practical management approaches that have since guided physicians worldwide. His work has been instrumental in shaping the understanding of long-term neurological complications of COVID-19.

As a program builder, he founded multiple Centers of Excellence in neurology, including specialized programs for COVID-related neurology and GBS/CIDP, advancing multidisciplinary care pathways and translational research in neuromuscular medicine.
